February 22 till 25, 1986 will forever remain in the annals of Philippine history as the supreme manifesation of genuine "PEOPLE POWER.
Filipinos from all walks of life - the rich, the poor, the religious, the employed and the unemployed, came in droves towards Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), between Camps Aguinaldo and Crame, during those fateful four days in February, to form a human barricade against the soldiers sent by the dictatorship.
Inspired by the heroic crusade of their truly elected leaders, Corazon C. Aquino and Salvador H. Laurel, and catalyzed into action by a brave bunch of military men led by the Defense Minister and the Armed Forces Vice Chief of Staff, millions went to defy the might of the repudiated arcos dictatorship. And they prevailed, without violence.
By their vigilance and courage, and the help of Divine Providence, the Filipino people triumphed over the forces of repression and tyranny.
The Bureau of Posts proudly commemorates, through these stamp issues, those unforgettable events that are now enshrined for posterity as "PEOPLE POWER".

Philippine Culion Money

The Culion Leper colony was administered by the Commonwealth Bureau of Health. Normal monthly expenditure was about 25,000 pesos, most of which was obtained directly from Manila. The outbreak of the war effectively severed source of supply.
Funds on hand were nearly exhausted in meeting the December 1941 payroll. The special Culion coinage was reissued, but was only a stop-gap measure. In late January 1942 at a public meeting, a proposal was adopted to issue a local scrip. A Currency Committeee was formed consisting of Dr. H. W. Wade, Medical Director of the Leonard Wood Memorial, as Chairman, with Acting Chief Pathologist Jose O. Nolasco and Disbursing Officer Julio Lisboa as Members.
The scrip was mimeographed on pink paper for centavo denominations and blue paper for peso denominations. The Bureau of Health stamping was applied on the back in blue. Notes were dipped in paraffin for durability.
Even so, the scrip was accepted with reluctance, and an appeal was made to President Quezon who telegraphed on February 9, 1942:
IF NECESSARY ISSUE NOTES FOR PAYMENT OF SALARIES AND OTHER EXPENSE. THESE NOTES WILL BE REDEEMED BY GOVERNMENT LATER.
A total of 144,485 pesos was printed, but only 92,130 pesos placed in circulation. When Japanese military scrip arrived at the end of July 1942, use of Culion scrip was officially prohibited.

The establishment of the Philippine Republic at Malolos on January 23, 1899 marked the climax of the Filipino struggle for inependence which began with the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in August 1898. The Philippine Revolution was Asia's first movement for national independence. This pivotal event was the inspiration of all nationalist movements in Asia which later developed in the 20th century.

The Philippine revolution itself was the culmination of a people's struggle for national dignity which spanned three centuries of colnial rule. Filipinos from all walks of life contributed their distinct share of sufferings, sacrifices and victories.

As a national revolution, Filipinos in all parts of the archipelago took part in this struggle. The declaration of independence in Kawit, the capture of the cities of Iloilo, Ceb and Bacolod in the Visayas and the raising of the Philippine flag in Butuan and Surigao in Mindanao were only few events in this glorious episode in Phlippine history.

On September 15, 1898, Filipino delegates in Malolos met and drafted the Constitution of the Philippine Republic. This document was a manifestation of the Filipino commitment to freedom. The Republic was Asia's first democracy and demonstration of the capability of the Filipinos to chart their own destiny as a free nation.

CENTENNIAL LOGO - This is an award winning design by Ma. Luisa A. Macasaet adopted in 1996 as the official logo of the Philippine Centennial Celebrations. The design features a stylized Philippine flag which forms the number "100", to symbolize the 100 years since the Declaration of Philippine Independence.

AGUINALDO HOUSE - Simple two-storey house owned by the family of general Emilio Aguinaldo, from where the independence of the Philippines was declared on JUNE 12, 1898. from one of the windows of the second floor, the Philippine National flag was officially unfurled to the music of the Philippine national march.

MALOLOS CONGRESS - Within the halls of Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan, the 193 delegates representing various parts of the Philippines convened the Philippine Revolutionary Congress on September 15, 1898, also known as the Malolos Congress. The Congress was responsible for the ratification of the declaration of the Philippine Independence on September 29, 1898 and the drafting of the Philippine Costitution.

CINCO DE NOVIEMBRE - a simultaneous province-wide uprising was staged in Negros on November 5, 1898 led by Generals Aniceto Lacson and Juan Araneta and capture Silay and BAGO where they raised the "Cry of Freedom".

CRY OF SANTA BARBARA - The Santa Barbara Covention was attended on November 17, 1898by leaders from all over Iloilo where the revolutionary government was inaugarated and the Filipino flag was raised for the first time in the province.

VICTORY OVER THE COLONIAL FORCES - The fight for independence took place all over the Philippines with Filipino forces winning successive victories over the the Spanish forces. By the end of 1898, most of the country were in Filipino hands. Depicted here is Cebu City whuich was evacuated by the Spanish forces on Decmeber 24, 1898.

PAGSILANG NG SAMBAYANANG PILIPINO STAMP WITH PHILIPPINE FLAG - With the impending victory of the Philippine Revolution throughout the archipelago, emissaries of the Revolutionary Government proclaimed Philippine independence and sovereignity over the island of Mindanao on 17 January 1999. This historic act, which took place in Butuan, then military capital of the Province of Surigao, marked the end of colonial rule in this part of the country, and was fittingly carried out with the official hoisting of the Philippine flag, (Surigao was First December 26, 1898).

RATIFICATION OF THE MALOLOS CONSTITUTION - On January 01, 1898, the delegates of the Malolos Congress ratified the Constirution of the Republic of the Philippines and was proclaimed to be in effect by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. The Philippine Constitution of 1899 was Asia's first democratic Constitution.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE PHILIPPINE REPUBLIC - In elaborate rites in the town of Malolos, the republic of the Philippines was inaugurated on january 23, 1899 with Gen. Aguinaldo as its President. Shown here was a float drawn by an unknown artist showing a woman dressed in a Philippine flag.

PAGSILANG NG SAMBAYANANG PILIPINO WITH BARASAOAIN CHURCH - This is the official logo of the Centennial Celebrating the Birth of Our Nation. The culmination of the Centennial Celebrations was on January 23, 1999, the Centennial of the Establishment of the Philippine Republic and the Ratification of the First Constitutional Democracy in Asia.

Background info

The Chinese traditional society used the Chinese traditional calendar because it fitted well to the agricultural production strongly characterized by reasons. This kind of traditional calendar which relates to the fullness or incompleteness of the moon is also called "the lunar calendar". The Chinese traditional calendar uses the ten Heavenly Stems as serial numbers and also in combination with the twelve Earthly Branches to designate years, months, days, and hours. Sixty kinds of combinations can be achieved by making pairs with Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, and so on from the ten Heavenly Stems and Zi, Chou, Yin, Mou, and so on from the twelve Earthly Branches in cycles. The twelve Earthly Branches are used as well to combine with twelve kinds of animals. Thus each year has one of the names of the twelve symbolic animals with a 12-year cycle, which is called "Sheng Xiao" of this year. Consequently Renshen Year is the Year of Monkey. The person who was born this year is called the one who was born in the year of monkey.

These two stamps is the first set of the lunar year stamps in the second circle, designed by the means of Chinese folk paper-cut. The first stamp depicts a peach with the figure of a monkey, which can be always used to celebrate someone's birthday. The second stamp shows a Chinese seal character of monkey in the background of red paper-cut featuring a magpie is announcing good news to everyone.

Background info

For the convenience of farming production with clear seasonal changes, China traditionally applied the lunar calendar based on the shape of the moon. The order of years was composed of the ten Heavenly Stems and the Twelve Earthly Branches. The combination of Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding etc. in the ten Heavenly Stems and Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao etc in the Twelve Earthly Branches totals 60 kinds, which are called "60 Jia Zi" meaning a cycle of 60 years. Twelve animals match with the twelve Earthly Branches with each representing one year. Gui-You Year is the year of the cock. Therefore, cock is the symbolic animal for people born in this year.

In this set of stamps, the first one with white background and red cock implies our country will be more prosperous in the coming year. The second one, a Chinese character of "cock" with the drawing of peony, lotus, chrysanthemum and plum blossom around, symbolizes good luck for four seasons.

Background info

1998 is the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese lunar calendar. The heavenly stems and earthly branches were the traditional Chinese method for numbering the years. The tiger is the third of the third of the 12 zodiac animals. In popular China, the tiger has always been considered the king of all beasts, a sign of might, strength the households. In Licheng of Shanxi Province, there is a legend about a tiger taming a mountain monster: The mountain monster, manipulating a drove of poisonous snakes, insects and scorpions, did harm to the local residents. When a deity came, he offered elixirs of life to detoxify the locals. Prior to his departure, he presented a "divine gift"-a gold tiger-to the locals. Safety had been guaranteed for the households and people of Licheng ever since. Later, locals began to sew cloth tigers of various descriptions, and children began to wear tiger-head shoes and tiger-head caps. This practice has been passed down to the present and has evolved into a local tradition.

Modern Topicals, Classical and Philippine Stamps

Modern stamp collecting has always been interesting for us since we started organizing some of our items by topics and themes. Some collectors/stamp dealers are in the opinion that collecting modern stamps is the fastest growing segment now among collectors. New collectors tend to collect stamps that they want and themes that are easy to understand. They would rather acquire the new issues that interest them than get into collecting the classics.

We are in agreement that indeed more and more collectors are going into these modern thematic type of collections. With a big variety and lots of beautiful designs and topics, we too got hooked. As mentioned earlier, we have collections from a range of many topics and we still add items to them.
Fortunately, we started earlier in collecting these topicals and with many items already, we are able to start our new blog at http://angelas-thematic-collections.blogspot.com
Initially we are posting animal topicals which are among our first and biggest thematic collections. We have even divided these into collections of specific animals on stamps.

Up to now however, the classics still is a focus of our acquisitions. We have limited information on the valuation of these stamps and we still collect a great variety especially with the 19th and early 20th century stuff. A lot could be learned from these old stamps. We really would like to learn more on the background ground of the designs and the technical details of these stamps. Is there an on line library of some sort? Or even an online catalogue? Hope someone can help us.
Anyway, we do want to concentrate on stamps from the old british commonwealth, from hongkong and china and of course from the Philippines.

With a modestly large Philippine Stamp Collection already; we are also planning to start a filipiniana blog which will feature items from our Philippine Collection. We are currently trying to expand our collections from the spanish, american, and japanese eras. Hope this also will soon be a reality.

We haven't even gotten to improve the look, layout, and the content of our different blogs. We look forward to have links with other stamp collectors, a message board or a forum, counters, a guest book etc. But as of now, we have been busy just with organizing our collections and trying to have them posted. If you have suggestions on how to improve our blogs, we will really appreciate it.

New Blog for Topical / Thematic Collections

We just started a new blog gallery to feature some of our thematic collections. We have planned to display these in our other blog http://angelas-collections.blogspot.com . But currently, what we have been posting are new acquisitions and items from our "China" collections.

Our initial collections way back then were largely accumulations. It was later on that we began to concentrate on certain themes that interested us most. But as we came across more items later on, our topical collections also became very varied. It became so many that it was a hard time to build an exclusive but extensive collection. Our resources sometimes get to be spread too thin and our concentration divided. So here we will post some of the collections that grew through the years.

We have not been able to update angelas-store as much as we would like to. We also have not conducted our auctions regularly at www.ebay.ph. We still have to sort out lots of stuff, scan them, organize them in our files and look for descriptions.

We are not stamp or coin traders. We are collectors, and thats why sometimes its hard to sell things that have been acquired through the months and even years. Sometimes, we even get to do more buying than selling.

The galleries of our collections in our blog at http://angelas-collections.blogspot.com/ (pls see our link in this page: angela's stamps and coins) have been constantly updated because of these acquisitions. As our interests shifts, we get to seek out new items and some of them we know little about. And this also takes our time in updating and arranging the new and the old items in our collections of stamps, paper money and coins. This process, including the decision on which ones to post in our blogs and which ones to sell; seems to be a difficult and endless one.

Please do browse over our blogs and if there are any comments, suggestions, and information you could share with us, it is very much appreciated. We have been blogging for some time now, so do check out also the past postings in all our blogs and you might find some things that may interest you.

From time to time, we invite you to visit us again once in a while. We try to update our blogs as much as we can. We are currently preparing materials for our future postings. And also we will try to have our auctions in http://www.ebay.ph (seller: angela_m2m) to be as frequent as possible especially when we have new items to offer.

CHINA First Day Covers

We came across some First Day Covers from CHINA. FDCs are relatively new interests of ours. But seeing them only reinforced the attractiveness of FDCs as collectibles and we got some of them for our collections. The FDCs from CHINA have beautiful cachets and a short description is at the back of the envelope. Incidentally, we have some of the stamps featured in the First day Covers. Japanese Occupation Era Philippine Stamps and Covers are HOT!!??!!

We would like to thank you who have taken time out to go through our blogs and its links; and everybody who has taken an interest in our auctions in http://www.ebay.ph (seller name angela_m2m). Some of our auctions are currently ongoing and will end within the next couple of days.

It is heartening to note that aside from the well informed collectors both here in the Philippines and abroad, there seems to be a lot of new collectors taking to the hobby and looking at our auctions. Their interests vary and we are glad to be able to offer some of our items to them.

Most collectors took to bidding Philippine MINT Republic issues, (esp the newer souvenir sheets and the older individual sets), and the various used stamp lots (both local and foreign); we auctioned.

Collectors of paper money also took their share in bidding. We sold several lots of foreign paper money to collectors abroad. If not for the hassle of delivery (couriers screen items to be sent), we also have a lot of coins for collectors to offer. We have coins from the spanish-philippines era and lots of foreign coins. Right now, maybe an appointment to meet in makati would be a start.

But what surprised us is the big interest in the items from the Japanese Occupation Era. of the Philippines. We have also just began collecting them. Seeing covers from the era also led us into collecting USPI and Jap Occ Covers/FDCs (First Day Covers) and the older Republic FDCS.
We received several emails and inquiries from the long time collectors, and the new collectors who were looking for items from that time period. Luckily, we had some and promptly put it out for bidding. The items we put in auction were priced to sell because we got them at low prices back then; and they got sold out at once. The other items which we got only recently were priced higher but surprisingly, they were also sold. And now as we continue to look for items for our auction, the past dealers from whom we got our items, don't have more or are now simply priced higher.

The demand seems to have spilled over to our suppliers and is driving the prices higher and the Jap Occ items are getting harder to come by as more of them gets locked in collections. After all, the Japanese Occupation era lasted for just several years.
Just a few years. Maybe from the collectors point of view, but its passing was none the moment sooner for those who lived through it. Items from this era surely gives a lot of history.

Is this a trend for collecting? Will these items be harder to come by?Will these items appreciate in price? We really don't know. But we sure will continue to be watching out for stamps, covers and other interesting items from this era. Mammilaria spinosissima
Oval shaped, bluish-green plants up to 20 cm high, 6 -7 mm thick. They have oval, cone-like tubercles and white woolly and bristly axils.

Ephithelantha bokei
From the Big Bend area in West Texas, USA. E. bokei is probably hte most beautiful of all species in the Genus. The plant is usually found growing solitary in the wild although multi-headed specimens have also been found. It is difficult to find among the limestone it inhabits.
In addition, it sometimes produces offsets and clusters, although other specimens remain solitary. the creamy white or pure white spines lie very close to the plants body, and gives the plant a smooth appearance

Genus of mostly clump forming, spherical to columnar, perennial cacti with flowers prodeuced in profusion from plant base, usually 2-3 years after raising from seeds. Much ribbed tuberculate, green stems have short spines.

Turbinicarpus alonsoi
From Guanajuato, Mexico. First described in 1996 and named after its discoverer, a Mexican boy named Alonso. It is one of the most beautiiful and distinct members of the Genus Turbinicarpus, a group of rare and small sized, globular cacti with spine which are usually papery, hairy or feathery and found only in Mexico.
The plants have beautiful flowers. T. alonsoi is solitary, possesses a large tap root, is globose greyish-green or glaucous with a flattened top. In the wild, it grows partly underground and attains a size of up to 4.4 inches long (11 cm.), 2.4 to 3.6 inches in diameter 96 to 9 cm.). The spines are weak and generally fall off from the older tibercles of the plant. T. alonsoi generally flowers from March to October, mainly between April and June. The flowers are cherry red to pink-magenta, with a more intensely coloured mid-stripe.

The United Nations has declared 2006 the year of the turtle in an effort to save the gentlespecies. Twenty-five countries in the Indian Ocean Southeast Asian (IOSEA) region, including the Philippines, have signed a Memorandum of Undertaking (MoU) dedicating 2006 to the protection of sea turtles, locally known as pawikan.

5 of the 7 known species of marine turtles in the world are found in the Philippines; the loggerhead, leatherback, olive ridley, hawkbill and green turtle. The IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU is working to conserve six of the world's seven species of marine turtles inhabiting the IOSEA region, including the Flatback turtles (Natator depressus).

Darna, by Nestor Redondo. Nestor Redondo was exposed to komiks before he could read and write. His father used to bring him imported comics. What fascinated him were Tarzan, Buck Rogers, Superman, Flash Gordon, The Lone Ranger ans Captain America. He took up Architecture at the Mapua Institute of Technology, and at the same time illustratin komiks stories for Bulaklak Publications. Soon, he was neck deep in the komiks craft. He illustrated a serial, Palos, penned by his brother Virgilio, who is himself an illustrator. Palos was successful and ran for 14 years. Then followed by other stories by Virgilio, among them Diwani and Gagamba. He also did the artwork for most of pablo Gomez's opuses; Gilda, Bangkusay and Dayukdok. Redondo's popularity really skyrocketed when he was commissioned by the Ace Publications to illustrate Mars Ravelo's blockbuster series Darna. in 1972, he established contact with American comic book and magazine publishers. That started his international exposure. Initially, he illustrated several episodes of Buurough's Tarzan. Later, he took over the artwork for The Swamp Thing, a very popular series in the United States. He ran an art studio in his Valenzuela, Bulacan home, and accepted commissions from U.S. publishing firms. He participated in art exhibits here and in the U.S., and lectured abroad on komiks illustration. In 1979, he was bestowed the prestigious "Inkpot Award" by the San Diego (California) Comics Convention. Previous to this, he was the recipient of the Valenzuela (Bulacan) Kalikasan Award for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of arts and culture as a comics illustrator.

Most of our buyers have been from the Philippines, but have come from all over the country. We have had bidders from Northern Luzon, the Visayas and the Mindanao Area. The wonders of technology. Communication through email, and text messages have made coordination and communication very easy and smooth.

Payment by our bidders, usually is through bank deposit and the auction lots are sent by Courier which usually takes only a day after the package is sent. Some bidders who are in the area of Makati, or have messengerial services, have opted to pick up the auction lots and have paid C.O.D. (Cash On Delivery).

For international buyers, payment through Money Order / Money Transfer through Western Union has been preferred by us and been made by a few. This has limited the options of most buyers. Sending payment by mail is considered risky.

Recently, we have registered at http://www.xoom.com to be able to receive payment by paypal. Paypal is not yet available here in the Philippines. But through this site, we hope that buyers from other countries may send their payment just like paypal and charge it to their credit card (pls do check out the details and we are not really quite familiar with it at this time yet). We have been quite busy with scanning and then posting a lot of stuff and collectibles in http://www.ebay.ph under seller name angela_m2m for the past couple of weeks. We have had quite a small bit of successful sales and have expanded our listings to more than a hundred items.

The auction items include a lot of stamps that we have posted here in our blogs. Topical stamps include the Olympics, animals, birds / ducks, fishes, flowers etc. We also included some Postal Cards and First day Covers (FDCs) from the Japanese Occupation period (1940s); some USPI (United States -Philippine Islands ) stamps (including a sheet of 50 stamps); some Spanish period (1890s) stamps; and a number of paper money lots(which elicited a number of bids) from different countries (including China) and Uncirculated Philippine paper money with various overprints. There are some Philippine paper money from World War II (guerilla money) and from the English and Pilipino Series. There is also a prestige booklet (of stamps) issued for the Philippine Centennial.

Coastal Resources Conservation MINT Souvenir Sheet

The importance of Philippine coastal resources for food security, poverty alleviation and employment, cannot be overemphasized. However, they are under serious threats from over-exploitation, causing both the depletion of resources and degradation of natural habitats, and other unsustainable uses such as pollution and fishing with explosives and poisons.

In response to these threats, there are efforts underway and by now increasingly adopted through the Local Government Units, with the support by different line agencies, the academe, and non-government organizations. Coastal resources management activiities are implemented with the intensive participation of communities and their people's organization. Important aspects or componnents of coastal resources management are illustrated in the souvenir sheet:

1. Marine sanctuaries or marine protected areas (upper left). Marine sanctuaries are at present the best hope to conserve fish resources and protect the natural habitat of fishes. Community capability building, information and education activities, as well as advocacy are also part of the process.

2.Reef monitoring (lower left). This information is necessary to make decisions not only on the selection of reefs for establishment of marine protected areas, but also to monitor the increase of coral cover and to assess the positive impact of conservtion efforts.

3. Mangrove reforestation (upper right). Philippine mangrove resources have decreased dramatically over the last decades due to production offirewood, charcoal and other uses, and conversion into coastal fishponds. Mangroves are beneficial in stabilizing coastlines, trapping sediments, and providing essential feeding and ursery grounds for a large number of ecnomically important fish species.

4. Seaweed farming (lower right). Coastal communities depend on coastal resources for food and income and they are more likely to protect and conserve if they also gain sustainable benefits from these resources like seaweed farming and other alternative livelihood or income diversification backed by technical and entrepreneurial advisory services.

First Day Covers.

Our interest in First Day Covers (FDCs) has come rather belatedly. Previously FDCs of particular stamps (Rizal, Scouting , Jap Occupation, JFK etc)were just the ones we collected initially. For sometime, our other FDC collections were largely unsorted.
Blogging has certainly contributed to our renewed attention on them. After visiting some blogs and then looking through at our assortment of FDCs; we realiize that indeed, collecting First Day Covers; (and various covers, for that matter) really is interesting. Well; not all of them actually, but still, a number of them were found to be great collectibles. Seeing and finding different cachets also proved to be fun and gave new insight. Since we have quite a bit of FDCs in our collection, we have started a new blog in order to post them; and as usual in a gallery fashion.

The amphibians of the Philippines have not been given much attention by Filipino scientists and the Filipino as a whole. A major reason for this appears to be lack of appreciation of the role of these animals in nature and in human affairs. Except for students who are required to dissect frogs and toads in their introductory biology courses and people in rural areas who regularly eat certain species of frogs, people generally fail to see much use for these animals yet, amphibians for various biological reasons have been favorite subjects for experiments in developing biology.
While Philippine frogs are useful as food, their real scientific importance lies beyond this culinary use. They are in excellent group for scientific research. Aside from ecological and life history studies, investigations on their biodiversity, systematics, evolution, responses to climate change and conservation are sorely needed to understand the role of Philippine amphibians more fully.
The majority of Philippine frogs, especially the endemic species, live in primary lowland and mountain forests. Endemism is high (ca 70%). This is so because of favorable factors, like relative isolation of mountain peaks and separation of islands by sea barriers. Unfortunately, most endemic species face a high probability of extinction in the near future if the present rate of forest destruction continues.

The Philippine frogs featured are:
Spiny Tree Frog (Nyctixalus spinosus Taylor)- A small frog with slender body and limbs. Cranial and supralympanic crests crsts and numerous pointed and whitish tubercles present on the upper surfaces. Color in life is reddish-brown above. Eggs (30-40) are probably attached to walls of tree holes. Tadpoles were found in rainwater collected in hole at base of living tree (Agathis) in forest. Altitudinal range is from 500 to 1,100m.
Range: Basilan, Mindanao, and Bohol Islands
Truncate-Toed Chorus Frog (Kaloula conjuncta Peters) - A small to medium-sized frog with finger tips expanded and truncate. Skin above is smooth or with scattered small tubercles. Usually with a dark, obscure pattern on back. This frog burrows in soil or climbs vegetation. it is generally secretive except during breeding seasons when it forms large breeding congregations in ponds. Food consists of ants and beetles Altitudinal range is from sea level to 770 m. Four subspecies are currently recognized.
Range: Throughout the Philippines
Variable-Backed Frog (Rana signata Gunther) - A small to medium-sixed Frog with a somewhat slender body and long legs. Light dorso-lateral folds evident on back. Skin on back smooth or granular: Dight tips are slightly enlarged. Toes about three-fourths to fully webbed. The pattern of smottling on the back is variable. Inhabits mountain streams. Individuals have been observed in water or on rocks in close proximity to water. Altitudinal distribution is from sea level to 330 m. Three subspecies are currently recognized.
